Learn How To Pack!

Lets start by learning how to pack a carton properly.

The following standard requirements apply to the packing of effects, especially fragile or breakable items, into cartons.

This is to give you a general idea of how each carton is to be packed. We will go into individual requirements for each item that may be encountered after.

1. Make up your carton by always crossing the tape on the bottom to give the base more strength.

2. Line the bottom of each carton with crushed paper or other approved cushioning material that is pressed down firmly and evenly to a depth of approximately 5 centimetres (2 inches).

3. Place the wrapped items on top of cushioning material, always on their edge, starting with the heavier items.

4. Pack bundles tightly together to prevent movement but do not ‘bow’ sides of carton.

5. Fill any empty spaces and sides of cartons with approved cushioning material.

6. Place a layer of cushioning material to a depth of approximately 5 centimetres on top of bottom tier.

7. Place the next, lighter, wrapped items still on their edge, on top of the cushioning material until tier is complete, as before.

8. Fill in space between top tier and lid with adequate cushioning material, to a minimum depth of 5 centimetres.

9. Tape each carton as soon as it’s packed and write on tape or carton;

- Name of owner- Destination- Room it’s from- Brief description of it’s contents

e.g. Smith Qld Kitchen Glassware

If you are packing a bedroom, try to write the name of the person who’s room it is. If you don’t know the name, try to describe the room as best you can e.g. baby’s room Girls or boys room Bunk bed room Spare room

10. Indicate whether carton has delicate freight by using FRAGILE stickers or write FRAGILE in a prominent position. If the carton will not bear weight use TOP LOAD stickers or write TOP LOAD ONLY in a prominent position.
