Packing Glassware

Easily and Safely

Many people tend to get very nervous when it comes to packing glassware.

We use glasses every day of our lives without so much as a thought as to how fragile they are, but then all of a sudden, when it comes to packing them up the nerves start. The glasses become slippery. We need to carry them in two hands because we are now aware of how easily they can be dropped and broken.

Let me tell you this. Packing glassware is one of the easiest things to do if you use your common sense and follow some simple directions.

Lets get straight into it then.

The first thing is to make sure you have prepared your carton properly.

If you've forgotten how to set up a carton for fragile items simply follow this link and we'll gladly remind you. Preparing your carton

Glasses

Glasses can be wrapped up either individually, or if they are tumbler type glasses, in packs of two.

Glasses that have some curves or are not uniform in their shape should always be wrapped individually.

Simply place your glass near a corner of your bundle of paper and fold a piece of paper from the corner over the glass making sure it is completely covered.

Now roll your glass towards the opposite corner a couple of times and then fold each side of the paper over the bundle and roll a couple of times more. Then bring your bundle back near the corner you started from and repeat the process using one or two pieces of paper.

Always place you wrapped glass into your carton with the drinking edge down.

If your glasses are uniform in their shape, by that I mean that their sides are basically straight and upright, then you should be able to wrap them up safely in bundles of two.

Place the first glass near the corner of your bundle of paper and fold one or two pieces of paper from the corner over the top of it making sure it is completely covered.

Place your second glass on top of the piece of paper you just folded over the first glass making sure that the two glasses are not touching.

Fold the two sides of your paper over the two glasses and then fold the bundle over, away from you, towards the opposite corner.

Bring the bundle back near the corner and wrap again in two pieces of paper.

Again place the bundle in the carton with the drinking edge down.

Long Stem Glassware

Packing glassware that have long stems such as champagne flutes or other wine glasses, requires a little bit of extra preparation.

The stems of these types of glasses should be reinforced before you wrap them in paper.

One of the easiest ways of doing this is to fold a piece of wrapping paper so that it is the same width as the stem, then you wrap the folded paper around the stem until it is fully covered, and so that the stem now has a bit of bulk to it.

Then you wrap the glass up in the same manner as you did for the other glasses.

Remember. Stack the glass in the carton with the drinking edge down.

Decanters, Vases and Bottles

If you have glass decanters you should always remove the stoppers or lids and wrap them up separately. They may be wrapped in bundles of no more than three, as long as each is separated by paper. Make sure that the final bundles are large enough so that they don't get mistaken for bits of crushed paper when you are unpacking.

Decanters and bottles should be wrapped in the same manner as glasses.

If the decanter, vase or bottle is large you will find it easier to wrap in your paper, if you fan the paper away from the corner where you are going to start to wrap from. This will give you more paper to wrap in as you roll the decanter or bottle away from you.

When you are packing glassware such as decanters, vases and bottles into your carton they should be placed in the carton as they stand.

Glass Bowls

Glass bowls can be wrapped individually, but if you have a set, for example a set of glass mixing bowls, that come in differing sizes, you can nest them in side one another so long as you have plenty of paper separating them and they can't move inside each other.

To wrap a large glass bowl, first crush up some paper and fill the bowl with it. Now place the bowl in the middle of your bundle of paper and fold a piece of paper from the corner over the top and then fold the sides over and fold the whole bowl over so that it is now upside down.

Bring the bowl back towards the middle of your paper and wrap it up again in two or three pieces of paper.
